Knowledge and Research Services Manager

Law firm  is seeking a Knowledge and Research Services Manager to direct library, knowledge, and research services firm-wide. This is a unique opportunity to lead a Knowledge and Research Services Team that is a critical part of our Data and Innovation Department, which also includes Legal Project Management and Data Strategy. Together we to strive to deliver data and services in ways that benefit our internal and external clients. The Knowledge and Research Services Manager will also work closely with Practice and Industry Group Leaders, the Marketing team, and firm leadership to support the firm’s strategic business objectives.

The Knowledge and Research Services Manager can be located or work remotely in any of our markets, excluding California and Texas. Periodic travel to office locations for in-person interaction with other firm personnel, clients and/or representatives at the worksite is required.

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Strategizing and implementing best practices, processes, policies, priorities, and goals for the library, including developing a new competitive intelligence program.
  • Ensuring that knowledge and research services adhere to firm quality standards and market best practices.
  • Selecting, supervising, evaluating, and training team members. Supporting and advocating for the team, including soliciting feedback, developing skills, and directing performance improvements.
  • Performing budgeting and expense management for the department. Working with vendors to ensure advantageous pricing and licensing arrangements.
  • Leading and performing daily technical and administrative operations for the firm’s information resources.
  • Designing and delivering research and resources orientation and training sessions for legal and business professionals. Leveraging people, vendors, processes, and technology to deliver knowledge and research services and training in an efficient and scalable manner.
  • Promoting resources by maintaining intranet pages and other tools to facilitate research, retrieval, and current awareness.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and implementing information resources and technologies for the library with an eye toward improved service and research efficiencies. Working with practice and industry leaders to identify information and service needs and assess existing holdings.
  • Conducting in-depth research in wide range of areas including practice-specific areas of law, business intelligence, public records, legislative history, and media. Analyzing and synthesizing information to deliver results and solve problems under tight deadlines and fluctuating workloads.
  • Educating the firm about copyright compliance.
  • Gathering internal metrics to guide initiatives and ensure adoption of tools and resources.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  • Five years of progressively responsible work experience managing library operations and conducting legal research with legal or other professional service organizations.
  • Deep understanding of, and ability to train others on, efficient legal research process and tools. Willingness to learn new tools also essential.
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts for library and knowledge tools resources.
  • Previous experience preparing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in process improvement in a professional setting.
  • Strong leadership skills including critical thinking and creativity skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills required.
