Head Cataloger/Metadata Librarian

Position: Head Cataloger/Metadata Librarian

Reporting to the Associate Director for Technology and Digital Initiatives, the Head Cataloger/Metadata Librarian leads the day-to-day aspects of the library’s cataloging operation, both original and copy, record maintenance and the creation of metadata. The librarian will supervise one professional librarian and two paraprofessionals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages catalog operations, authority work, and quality control.
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging for print and non-print materials using local and national standards including MARC, other metadata schema, and Library of Congress classification. Materials primarily in English, German, and other Romance languages.
  • Maintains quality control of records in the library’s ILS and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Coordinates review, manipulation, and batch loading of vendor records/metadata for books and other library resources into the integrated library system
  • Plans, implements and oversees cataloging unit policies and procedures. Revises and updates cataloging procedures documentation.
  • Revises and updates cataloging procedures documentation.
  • Regularly trains staff in copy cataloging, authority control, use of ILS, database maintenance and reclassification activities.
  • Integrates an understanding of diverse communities into cataloging and metadata policies and practices.
  • Monitors professional developments and Library of Congress new and revised subject headings and classification monthly lists.
  • Stays current on trends and issues in the areas of cataloging, metadata, library systems, and scholarly communications.
  • Responsible for development of standards for metadata of Law Library collections.
  • Works closely with other library and Law School staff members as needed, to ensure optimal access to bibliographical resources and to resolve problems with e-resource records.
  • Coordinates Law’s participation in all components of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging
  • Assists in improving ILS functionality and resolving ILS problems.
  • Collects, maintains, and reports library resources and department analytics to Library Administration.
  • Generate statistics and performs other projects as requested.
  • Collaborates on future digitization projects, including developing metadata

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • M.L.S. or equivalent.
  • Cataloging/metadata project management experience.
  • Broad knowledge of cataloging and metadata and cataloging standards, schema, formats and related utilities and tools.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Sierra
  • Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
  • Education and experience with digitization and digital archival standards and technologies.

Classification

This is a faculty (non-tenure track) position, and after the first year is eligible for multi-year contracts.
