Reference & Data Services Librarian

This reference position is one of a team of professional librarians in the department of Research & Online Services, and reports to the Associate Director for Research & Online Services.  The principal duties of this position are providing reference service to our faculty and students; serving as a library liaison to various faculty members, teaching legal research to various constituencies; production of research guides in areas of subject specialization, and participation in collection development activities. In addition, this position will be responsible for advising and collaborating with Law School community members on empirical legal research projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serving as a member of the Law Library’s general reference team. As such, the candidate is expected to be able to
    • provide high-caliber legal reference service to Law School faculty and students;
    • serve as a library liaison and provide proactive and personalized library services for faculty, including complex research, research assistant training and the tracking of faculty scholarship;
    • assist in the staffing of the in-person and virtual reference desk, a task that entails some evening and weekend hours;
    • author and update research guides, bibliographies, and other types of instructional material; and
    • perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serving as Data Services Librarian, the candidate is expected to be able to
    • Provide advice and support to patrons in research projects involving statistical and data analysis, data manipulation, and data visualization.
    • Assist patrons with the acquisition of datasets, storage of datasets, and the performance of statistical analysis.
    • Advise scholars concerning research tools and methods that might make the empirical research process more efficient and effective.
    • Contribute to decision-making on data platform and other related priorities.
    • Stay abreast of trends and developments in data services and information technology and enhances that knowledge among other library staff members.
    • Provide training as needed.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • M.L.S. (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide in-depth and complex legal research and reference support.
  • Experience in use of datasets, or in supporting researchers engaged in quantitative data work; familiarity with common software tools used to conduct this type of research.
  • Experience in statistical methods and analysis.
  • Fluency with one or more common tools used by researchers to work with data.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • 1-3 years of professional law library experience, with academic library experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with and supporting individuals across the lifecycle of empirical research projects.

Classification

This is a non-tenure track faculty (Assistant Librarian of Practice) position, and after the first year is eligible for multi-year contracts.
